KU Panhellenic Association Passes Gender Based Violence Prevention Standing Rule for New Members

University of Kansas Panhellenic Association has passed a standing rule giving new members access to a gender-based violence prevention training seminar

The seminar was created in conjunction with the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center SAPEC) and the members of the Panhellenic Executive Board. Participation in this course will eliminate all weekend and evening training obligations new members previously had, in order to get the information in a more feasible way.

LDST 301. It's On Us: Gender Based Violence Prevention: This class is addressing Gender Based Violence Prevention. This class examines the foundational concepts of Gender Based Violence Prevention at the individual level. Topics covered include; but are not limited to, Consent, Drug and Alcohol Facilitated Rape, Gender Based Violence as Oppression, and Bystander Intervention. Students will participate in small and large group discussions, online reflection journals, and evidence based trainings. At the end of the eight-week course students will be able to 1) Assess behaviors that put other at risk for violence, victimization, or perpetration (2) Identify the four main characteristics of consent and describe what is necessary for consent to be present (3) Identify and apply strategies for safely intervening as an active bystander on the individual level (4) Identify multiple ways that power and oppression is impacted by individual identity.

LDST 301 is offered in as a hybrid class that meets one time per week for 50 minutes in-person with asynchronous online content. The course is offered as a 1 credit hour class with a variable credit option available. LDST 301 uses a small group discussion model with a variety of different information mediums. Classes are taught by passionate and engaging multidisciplinary staff from a social justice framework.   

This course can be taken for 0-1 credits. If taken for 0 credits, the course is free to the student. There is also a scholarship offered by the University of Kansas Panhellenic Association that covers the cost of the course if taken for credit. Students who are required to take this course:

Individuals who participated in Fall Formal Recruitment and received a bid will have two semesters to enroll in the course: the fall semester they go through recruitment and the spring semester directly following. However, classes in the spring will be limited.

Individuals participating in Continuous Open Recruitment have two semesters to enroll in the course, these being the two semesters directly following the semester in which they accepted a bid to their respective chapter.

If the subject matter of the course causes critical discomfort, students can excused from fulfilling the course requirement. Excusal from the course can occur before or during the course. This is a “no questions asked” policy and withdrawing form this course will not effect academic record. To be excused from the course, please contact the KU CARE coordinator at care@ku.edu.

The requirement to complete this course can be found in the Bylaws of the University of Kansas Panhellenic Association, Article III Sections 1-3.
